About NIE

The Record-Courier can get students excited about reading. It makes reading "come alive". The Record-Courier, Newspapers in Education program is part of an international educational effort that helps teachers use the very latest textbook - their local daily newspaper. The Record-Courier Newspapers In Education program helps teachers to instruct their students about the world around them. However, learning from the newspaper geos way beyond current events.

Students who read the newspaper regularly are exposed to news stories that relate to every subject in their curriculum. Our goals at the Record-Courier are to help students learn and develop reading and critical thinking skills which they can use on a daily basis and to help them become informed, involved citizens in the future. Since these goals are important to us, we provide free newspapers to area classrooms, with the help of community sponsors.

But NIE is much more than free newspapers: We provide a quarterly newsletter "Classroom Connect" to all area teachers; we offer tours of the Record-Courier and provide reporters who are happy to conduct classroom presentations. We feature "Class Act" students in the paper to honor students who are role models in their schools.

With Community sponsors, we are able to carry out our goal of positively impacting classroom learning by providing free newspapers to area classrooms. As word gets out to the community about the benefits of Newspapers In Education, we hope to be able to expand our services and resources.

We invite you to become involved with Newspapers In Education as a participating teacher or sponsor. Help us to expand our impact in Portage County classrooms.
